Conclusion

It is a tragic reflection on our times that the international trade in illicit drugs is worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Meanwhile, global revenue from alcohol is comparable to that of the arms trade, at over $1.5 trillion a year. At international, national, and local levels, societies have struggled to curb the epidemic of substance use. No matter whether substance users are considered victims or criminals, diseased or depraved, their fate is often dismal. While the cacophonous debate is endless, we can but attempt to shed light on the nature of the addictions through careful research, as well as offer our best available treatments — if not to cure, at least to ameliorate.
